BLACK lives matter
Putting down the pen, a sigh escapes my dark lips
Running my hand through cornrows down to their tips
Letting my mind wander about the future, what it holds for me
Living in a world where people like me are treated unfairly
All because of the presence of pigment, an overdose of melanin
Taking in the view before me through my ink black eyes
Watching as we suffer for something beyond our control
I thought we all had one maker
I thought within we are all made of flesh, bones and water
The blood running through our veins, all of us, is red
Then why this blatant disregard for our humanity
Because of the color of our skin we strive for what we are to be given
Looked down upon by our peers
Gunned down by those meant to protect us
Why can't they see it
The most basic anatomy
We are all human just a different variety
Like beautiful paintings
Just a darker shade
"never judge a book by its cover " has never been more literal
The world must come to terms with the fact
That we are strong, beautiful and proud
It doesn't depend on the skin color
It doesn't depend on the race or ethnic descent
It doesn't count how bruised and battered
We are black and we MATTER!!
