Theory of truth

Truth is like hydrochloric acid
Corroding every false layer
Till there's nothing left but singed friendships and burned bridges
Tainted with the ever present smell of regret
I've learnt this the hard way
Maybe that's why it's so poetic
Everyone wants the truth
But few can handle it
I once read a quote that said
"it is important to our friends to think we are unreservedly frank with them but important to friendship that we are not"
This got me thinking
People crave truth
Apparently you can't be friends without it
But this does not apply in real life
You see, for example
Jim and Dave had been friends for three years
Now there comes this girl, because as always there's a girl
Jim met her at a bar and they hooked up for a few weeks
After a while Dave rushed to Jim one night and said "I've found her, the girl I'm gonna marry"
Jim was estatic
On the day of their introduction, Jim found out that his best friends future fiance was the girl he'd been shagging until a week ago
He was devastated
He tried to talk to Dave about it but it was clear that he was so happy, he couldn't
So he was conflicted
Should I tell him or should I Not?
As for Dave ignorance was bliss as he basked in new love
Now looking at this situation one would say Jim should just go ahead and tell Dave the truth
And yet others would say what Dave doesn't know won't kill him
But in the end honesty won out
So Jim told Dave everything including the fact that he'd been unknowingly sleeping with Dave's dream girl until a week before he knew it was her
And so Dave completely broken hearted called of the relationship and stopped speaking to Jim
He started drinking to ease the pain and take away the suffering
So like every other tragedy he lost his job, he continued to be find solace in the bottle
Thinking about all his life could have been with the girl he fell hopelessly in love with
It didn't matter if she was sorry, he couldn't trust her no more
And after a series of unanswered phone calls, futile house visits and unreplied texts
To Jim, Dave became someone he used to know
Now tell me, have I successfully proved my theory
That it is important for our friends to think that we are o so truthful with them
But even more important that we sometimes keep our mouths shut and let sleeping dogs lie
Because in some cases ignorance really is everything
